Fiber and Laser Technologies
FLT
The Fiber and Laser Technology group conducts applied research in the field of optical and laser technologies, with particular focus on industrial, biomedical, environmental, and aerospace applications. Its activities cover the entire photonics value chain, from the design of optical components and systems to the development of advanced prototypes and their experimental validation in real-world application scenarios. The research activities are mainly organized around two core areas: the development of high-power laser systems and advanced sensing technologies based on light–matter interaction. In particular, the group designs and develops high-brightness laser sources, both fiber-based and diode-based, as well as advanced optical systems for beam control, shaping, and dynamic management. These technologies are applied in industrial fields, including additive manufacturing and advanced material processing, in biomedical applications such as therapeutic treatments and selective tumor ablation, and in the aerospace sector, including wireless power transmission systems. In parallel, the group develops optical and spectroscopic sensing systems for environmental and biomedical monitoring. In this context, it designs multimodal sensing platforms based on fiber-optic sensors, fluorescence techniques, and optical imaging. Optical technologies are integrated with data-driven approaches and machine learning methodologies for data analysis, automatic signal classification, and information extraction from complex measurement systems, with the aim of improving the accuracy, robustness, and reliability of the developed solutions. Main application areas include biomedical diagnostics, structural health monitoring, and the detection of contaminants, microorganisms, and physico-chemical parameters for water quality assessment. The group adopts a strongly multidisciplinary approach, combining expertise in photonics, electronics, numerical modeling, signal processing, and artificial intelligence. FLT maintains active collaborations with universities, research centers, public institutions, and industrial partners at both national and international levels, participating in competitive projects funded at regional, national, and European scales. Particular attention is devoted to technology transfer, the valorization of research outcomes, and the development of innovative high-impact solutions for industry, environmental sustainability, healthcare, and advanced technologies.
