Biomedical Instrumentation and Neuromuscular System Engineering
LISiN
The research group carries out its activities within the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System (LISiN), which represents the core environment for its experimental and technological development. While maintaining its focus on the development and application of advanced, non-invasive methods to investigate the neuromuscular system, the group has progressively expanded its scope beyond the neuromuscular field toward a broader range of medical devices.
A distinctive feature of the group is its pioneer work and strong expertise in high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG), a technology that allows to study in a non-invasive way central and peripheral characteristics of the neuromuscular system. In this field LISiN has developed an internationally recognized scientific profile.
Building on its traditional research focus on HD-sEMG, the group has progressively extended its research toward a multimodal approach with the integration of HD-sEMG with other complementary technologies. By combining HD-sEMG with other electrophysiological signals, muscle imaging techniques, as well as kinematics and dynamics signals, the aim is to advance the current understanding on the central and peripheral mechanisms of neuromuscular system in healthy and pathological conditions.
At the same time, the group has broadened its research and development activities to the design, prototyping, validation, and certification of medical devices for a wider range of healthcare applications (e.g. devices for recording biopotentials, wearable devices for monitoring and telemonitoring vital signs, etc.).
The combination of the complementary competences of its members supports research activities ranging from the development of new biomedical devices and methods to their application in translational and clinical contexts. The group translates technological research activities in different applicative fields in collaboration with a wide network of partners. Applications range from basic physiology to motor rehabilitation, ergonomics, assistive technologies, and sport science.
